Being a student in times of climate crisis: what is our role as lecturers?

to

Many students are concerned about climate change and want to contribute to solutions for the climate crisis. But how large is the group of students with these concerns, and are climate emotions receiving sufficient attention in higher education? How do we prepare our students for the major challenges of our time, such as the climate crisis?

In this dynamic session, we will explore our views and current teaching practice on climate and sustainability issues. We will pay close attention to the issues that make these topics so complex and controversial. These include climate emotions, but also values (such as autonomy and caring) and moral aspects of climate issues (such as who is responsible). Together, these aspects create a situation where polarisation is a real possibility. How can we ensure that students in our lecture halls feel empowered to do something about the climate crisis?

We will start with an interactive exercise to examine our visions of the future and the degree of influence we believe we have on that future. We will also put ourselves in our students' shoes. What do they think? Expect an active session, both mentally and physically, with insights from research and, as a bonus, concrete tools for you teaching practice.

This session of part of the Utrecht Science Week and will be led by Andrik Becht (Social Sciences) and Michiel van Harskamp (Science). Session leader Andrik Becht is also project leader of the CAT-supported USO educational innovation project on this topic: .
