Recap Learning Analytics day 29 November 2024
On Friday, November 29, 2024, we hosted the first learning analytics (LA) morning to celebrate that our project has been running for three years! No fewer than 11 LA projects at UU were put in the spotlight. We will soon also post the digital versions of the posters on this website under Output and materials.
Welcome by Margot van der Starre and Anouschka van Leeuwen.
The day started with a presentation by Margot van der Starre (vice president of the Executive Board) who mentioned that it should be possible for everyone at the UU to use LA to improve education. She felt that UU should cherish this 鈥渄iamond鈥. Afterwards, the team leader of team LA, Anouschka van Leeuwen, explained all that team LA has achieved in the past three years, such as: writing the LA policy, setting up the right organization (the LA roadmap) to be able to initiate LA projects, developing a technical infrastructure and perhaps most importantly: running multiple LA implementation projects. The ideal picture for the future is that we make LA a regular part of faculty's toolbox to design courses, and make it easier to do research on your own teaching by setting up an LA desk.
Poster sessions
These presentations were followed by an inspiring poster session in which 11 LA projects were on display. There were posters of both implementation and research projects. We also asked the audience to choose which poster they found most inspiring. This first edition of the LA Day prize was won by Melis D眉lger. Her PhD project focuses on improving self-regulation skills of elementary school students by using LA dashboards as a tool for teachers.
Discussion round
As the final part of this LA day, we continued to discuss topics that all LA projects face, such as implementation and scaling up of the projects and the support needed to do so. One of the ideas that arose was that the SIG LA could organize LA match-making sessions where researchers and project leaders of LA projects are paired up and can help each other to deploy and evaluate their LA initiatives. There was also a suggestion to organize an LA walk-in hour so that questions about LA can be asked in an approachable way.
All in all it was a very nice and diverse morning. If you want to know more about LA and/or the current projects, please take a look at our LA website.
