What are the Curriculum Reflection Tools?

The Curriculum Reflection Tools elicit reflection of a course or programme in regard to Inclusivity, Diversity and Equality (IDE) and how it could be made more accessible/suitable for various minority groups.
They are intended as a starting point for a discussion on inclusion and diversity with teachers and coordinators on a course. After such a discussion, you could decide there are elements that need altering and if so, which are the most relevant ones. Afterwards, you can use the Inclusive Teaching Toolbox that aims to guide you on how to make these changes.

There are three versions;

  • one at the course level for students;
  • one at the course level for teachers; and
  • one at the programme level.

The course level Curriculum Reflection tool

The course level reflection tool has two versions: one for students and one for teachers. Its purpose is to reflect on the current state of inclusive teaching in your course. It is not an assessment or evaluation tool but can be used as a starting point to find out what could be the most important course element(s) to adapt in your course to make the course more inclusive.

The teacher version of the reflection tool can be used by individual teachers or course coordinators or by the teaching team to reflect on the inclusiveness and diversity within the course. Experiences from other teachers show that filling out the reflection is most useful when it is used to start a discussion about all or specific aspects of the reflection tool. Besides teachers, students may fill out the student version of the reflection tool to further aid the reflection on the course.

The tool focuses on the following themes:

  • The learning objectives
  • Teaching and learning activities
  • Assessment
  • The learning material
  • The role of the teacher
  • Overall evaluation question

The programme level Curriculum Reflection Tool

Programme leaders may also find it difficult to realize a coherent and inclusive curriculum at the programme level. Does the curriculum, for example target intercultural competences alongside more traditional objectives? Are the topics addressed in the curriculum representative of multiple perspectives and visions? Does the program have policies for students with disabilities? The programme level Curriculum Reflection Tool is designed to help programme directors, coordinators and managers reflect on the inclusivity of the programme and can be used as a starting point to find out what could be the most important programme element(s) to adapt in your course to make the course more inclusive.

The tool focuses on the following themes:

  • Policy
  • Strategy
  • Programme level learning objectives
  • Curriculum Design
  • Inclusive environment
  • Teacher competencies for diverse and inclusive education

For more information on how to use the reflection tools you can access the Reflection Tool manual.
