What is the largest possible earthquake that can be expected in a given region?
As a PhD candidate at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, I focus on the physics of earthquakes. By combining recent field and laboratory measurements, I develop numerical computer models that help us better quantify and understand the size and dynamics of earthquakes. These models allow us to simulate future scenarios and thereby assess both earthquake behavior and the expected seismic hazard.
During my master鈥檚 program, I focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect earthquakes, in this case, in Albania. Using these models, we were able to automatically detect and locate thousands of small and larger earthquakes within just a few months, something that would take years to do manually. We first investigated which method performs best in detecting and locating as many earthquakes as possible.

The detection of more than 13,000 earthquakes then enabled us to map active fault structures in the Earth鈥檚 crust in three dimensions and over time. This follow-up study is currently under review.
