Robert McDonald is a PhD candidate at the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 School of Economics (U.S.E.). His research interests revolve around the fields of innovation, agrifood, and economic development. Robert applies these interests using a complex systems lens to examine how economies can utilise innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems to contribute toward economic and sustainable development.

Robert works as a researcher at the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 School of Economics. He has provided thesis superviosion to students at the BSc and MSc levels.Prior to beginning his PhD, he worked as a Junior Lecturer for several years at the economics school. Robert has lectured on the programmes: Economics and Business Economics and Philosophy, Politics and Economics, alongside giving guest lectures as part of the Interdisciplinary Course .
Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS)
Robert's research interests are underscored by complexity theory. Before working as a researcher, Robert has worked within the Centre for Complex System Studies. Topics of interest include: Transitions within Complex Systems, Complexity and Society, and Complex Systems Views on Fundamental Issues. The centre regularly hosts events (also on ). Robert currently works within the Young Complexity Researchers of Utrecht (YCRU) group, and has co-chaired the group in 2024-2025.
