Focus on the development of writing skills

Renske Bouwer is an Associate Professor of Language & Education. She has an interdisciplinary background in educational sciences, psychology, and linguistics, which she combines in her research on the development of writing skills from primary education through higher education. Using various quantitative and qualitative methods—such as eye tracking, keystroke logging, comparative judgment, interviews, observations, and text analyses—she unravels the cognitive, affective, and social processes of writing. She also investigates how to validly and reliably assess students’ writing skills and how to provide effective (peer)feedback.

Evidence-informed writing education that is effective and inspiring

Together with teachers, Renske translates scientific insights into evidence-informed teaching materials for educational practice. This combination of fundamental and practice-based research has already led to the successful spin-offs and , various scientific and practice-oriented awards, and a cum laude PhD at Utrecht Institute for Language Sciences.

Current research projects

In 2020, Renske received a Comenius Teaching Fellow grant for the development of an online platform for academic writing (). She is also PI of an interfaculty USO educational innovation project aimed at promoting the , as well as an NRO-funded project on dialogic writing in primary education (). She is co-promotor for five PhD candidates who are researching automatic and comparative text assessment, comparative peer feedback in secondary educaiton, the development of academic writing, and genre didactics across the curriculum.
