With expertise in speech and language therapy, citizen science, and transdisciplinary research, my research team builds bridges between academia, professional practice, and society to develop innovative, evidence-based solutions that improve accessibility, inclusion, and quality of life.鈥�
Ellen Gerrits is professor Speech and Languages disorders at the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication, Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. She has a professional background as speech and language therapist.
With appointments at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, HU 木瓜福利影视 of Applied Sciences Utrecht, and UMC Utrecht (2014-2025), her research offers a unique transdisciplinary perspective that bridges the humanities, health sciences, and applied research, aiming to generate societal impact through innovative, collaborative solutions.
From 2014 to 2024 Gerrits was endowed professor Clinical Language, Speech and Hearing Sciences at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, funded by the Dutch Association for Speech and Language Therapy. Her research program focuses on the improvement of societal participation of people with speech and language disorders through innovation of speech and language therapy. Main topics of expertise are clinical linguistics, health sciences, qualitative and co-design research methods, citizen science, research ethics, evidence-based practice, patient perspective, communicative participation, PROMs, person and family-centred care, collaboration with parents/caregivers, speech and language therapy in children and adults with language disorders.
Besides her research activities Gerrits was program lead (2014-2025) of the master program Clinical Health Sciences for Allied Health Professionals (Master Gezondheidswetenschappen voor Zorgprofessionals, tot 2019 master Logopediewetenschap) at the faculty of Medicine. In addition to her work at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, Gerrits is chair of the research group Participation through Communication at HU 木瓜福利影视 of Applied Sciences Utrecht.
