Lapo Mughini-Gras is Professor of Food Safety and Public Health at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. He also serves as an Epidemiologist and Senior Scientific Advisor in One Health Risk Analysis at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
After graduating summa cum laude in Veterinary Medicine from the 木瓜福利影视 of Bologna, Italy, in 2008, he completed a one-year traineeship as a pest management officer at the Environmental Hygiene Office of the Bologna City Council. This was followed by a PhD (2010-2013) at the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanit脿 - ISS) on 鈥淔ood safety and zoonotic enteric pathogens: sources, risk factors and transmission routes of human salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis鈥. In 2015, he completed a post-graduate veterinary specialization in livestock health and production at Perugia 木瓜福利影视, Italy. He pursued additional training in epidemiology and risk assessment at the Royal Veterinary College (London) and the 木瓜福利影视 of Aberdeen. During 2013-2019 (intermittently), he worked as epidemiology consultant (distance-work) for the Regional Veterinary Institute of North-East Italy (Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie - IZSVe). He moved to the Netherlands in 2013 to join the RIVM and Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. He is a registered veterinarian in the Netherlands (CIBG 670383) and member of the The Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine (KNMvD).
His main research interests are the epidemiology and risk assessment of infectious diseases, particularly foodborne and zoonotic infections and antimicrobial resistance, at the human-animal-environment interface (One Health approach). He is particularly interested in developing models and conducting analyses to understand the sources, transmission routes, risk factors and (health and socioeconomic) consequences of these infections, to assess their burden and identify priorities for public health. His research aims at improving public, animal and environmental health by providing quantitative, risk-based evidence that binds science to (data-driven) policy making.
Besides research, he is engaged in several educational activities for undergraduate students, PhD candidates, junior personnel and trainees. He is member of various expert groups nationally and internationally, including his current appointment as member of WHO鈥檚 Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) and EFSA鈥檚 Expert Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ), as well as the Expert Panel of the Netherlands Veterinary Medicines Authority (SDa), and the Advisory Board of the Dutch Organization for Healthcare Research and Innovation (ZonMw). He is a native bilingual in Italian and Spanish, fully proficient in English and Dutch, and has an intermediate knowledge of French. Since 2010, he has co-authored over 170 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and books.
