I am a visiting PhD student at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, originally from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil.
My research consists of assessing the potential environmental impacts of agave bioethanol, biomethane and natural fiber production in the Brazilian Semiarid. This is part of a program that aims to develop the technical and scientific basis for converting agave into a new competitive biomass source for bioenergy and biomaterials, with net carbon capture and sustainable socioeconomic development in the region. Furthermore, this research could contribute to scientific knowledge about the environmental sustainability of biofuel production in other semiarid regions of the planet. The approach comprises the development of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of bioethanol, biomethane and fiber production, and a spatially explicit assessment of the potential environmental impacts of agave cultivation for bioethanol production in relation to carbon (carbon stock change and land use change emissions), soil, water and biodiversity.
In parallel, I also work on calculating the carbon footprint of biofuel pathways in the Brazilian context, such as bioethanol, hydrogen from biomass gasification and bioelectricity, and SAF, for low-carbon policies such as RenovaBio and CORSIA.
