My research

I’m a Geoscientist specialising in subsurface modelling, focusing on tackling the challenges of integrating subsurface data in geological models of the Netherlands. My current research at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ, in collaboration with TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands, focuses on creating automated workflows for various steps in subsurface modelling using geostatistics and machine learning techniques to enhance subsurface characterisation. A key goal of my project is to integrate diverse data sources—such as borehole descriptions, well-logs, seismic data, and soft geological knowledge—into a cohesive subsurface model. By incorporating novel methods, I aim to overcome the tendency to treat these data streams separately, which limits the ability to produce comprehensive geological conclusions. I am also interested in how to evaluate geostatistical and machine learning methods to assess which models produce more geologically plausible results, reducing the need for extensive post-processing.

As part of my project, I prioritise creating reproducible workflows and using open-source software like R. I’m also exploring innovative ways to present scientific output, such as interactive data visualisations, beyond traditional formats.
