Jaap Verheul is Assistant Professor of Screen Media in the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. He holds a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from New York 木瓜福利影视, and has been a visiting scholar at the 脡cole Normale Sup茅rieure in Paris and the Freie Universit盲t in Berlin. Prior to joining Utrecht, he taught in the Department of Cinema Studies and the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York 木瓜福利影视; the Department of Film Studies at King鈥檚 College London; the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the 木瓜福利影视 of Groningen; and the Department of Film Studies at the 木瓜福利影视 of Southampton.
Jaap鈥檚 research focuses on European, British, and American cinema, media industries, digital screen cultures, and popular culture. Among other subjects, he has written on the dual monolingualism of contemporary Flemish cinema; the co-production of a European heritage brand for British television; the failed production of movie stardom; audience鈥檚 restricted access to screen cultures during the Covid-19 pandemic; Fascism and masculinity in early twentieth-century American media and politics; and social media photography, civic participation, and racial justice. Jaap edited a collection on The Cultural Life of James Bond: Specters of 007 (Amsterdam 木瓜福利影视 Press, 2020), which received the Publication Award for Best Edited Collection from the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS). He is currently completing his monograph on the regulation of European screen cultures and transnational flows of film and television in European media industries.
Jaap is the Lead for the BA Specialization in Film in the Department of Media and Culture Studies. Together with Philipp Dominik Keidl and Ari Purnama, he is the organizer of the UU Screen Studies Seminar at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. Together with Ruby Cheung, Jaap is the Co-Chair of the Screen Industries Work Group of the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS). He serves on the Nominating Committee of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS).
