Dennis Jansen (he/him) was awarded a ‘PhDs in the Humanities’ grant by NWO for the project ‘The Becoming-Playful of Warfare in the Netherlands’ (2021–2025). His research focuses on the ludification of warfare and the importance of playful technologies in Dutch militarization and military innovation. He deploys multiple case studies, including the development of an innovative flight simulator for F-35 pilots, the use of games for recruitment and training by Defense, the role of drones in modern warfare, and the experimental development of autonomous weapons systems in the Netherlands. His previous work has appeared in Transformative Works and Cultures, Press Start, DiGRA, Interactive Storytelling and First Person Scholar. Since 2023, Dennis is a substitute member of the Labour Representation Board on behalf of the Algemene Onderwijsbond. Dennis was associated with the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare research project and vice chair of the Research School for Media Studies PhD Council until 2025. Between 2021 and 2023, he was PhD Editor-in-Chief of Junctions: Graduate Journal for the Humanities.
