David van Alten is Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) in the Graduate School of Teaching (GST) - and the Department of Education. He is involved in the courses Pedagogy (1 & 2) and Professional in Practice (1 & 2), Digital Literacy and Education and ICT. Within the GST, he is coordinator and teacher of the thesis-support-groups for long-time students. As a researcher, he is involved in the Sector Plan for Social and Behavioural Sciences and conducts research on ICT and (secondary) education, with a focus on digital literacy, digital citizenship, and AI. On behalf of the GST, David works on the theme of collaborative teacher education and professional development across the education regions and within the AOS‑HUM and Op Reis partnerships.
In 2021, he received his PhD on the research topic Flipped Learning entitled: Flipped Learning in Secondary Education History Classrooms: What are the Effects and What is the Role of Self-Regulated Learning? This PhD research was part of a PromoDoc grant, where David combined the PhD research with a job as history teacher at Cals College Nieuwegein. He remained connected to the school until 2023, also in the position of Informationmanager in which he drafted ICT advice and policy for the board of Cals College and HIJN scholengroep.
