Fonds Vrienden van de Utrechtse Geesteswetenschappen steunt het Utrecht Excellence Scholarship programma
Het Fonds Vrienden van de Utrechtse Geesteswetenschappen heeft het Utrecht Excellence Scholarship (UES-)budget in 2020 verhoogd met 21.125 euro. In combinatie met de bijdrage van de Universiteit Utrecht en het Utrechts Universiteitsfonds kunnen hierdoor drie studenten afkomstig uit Argentinië, Nicaragua en Rusland in september starten aan hun Research Master binnen de Graduate School of Humanities. Het betreffen drie full scholarships die voorzien in zowel het collegegeld als levensonderhoud.

“The UES-scholarship has allowed me to hone my skills to the best of my abilities. I grew up in a small coastal town in India, called Mangalore, which was rather notorious for religious conflicts. As a teenager, I idealistically decided that this is a problem I want to "solve". The RMA Religious Studies programme allows me to focus on religion as a 'lived experience' and understand contemporary theories and problems surrounding the phenomenon of religion, and potentially apply them to complex, real-world problems of religious co-existence and difference.”
Belang van het beurzenprogramma
Voor veel getalenteerde studenten van buiten de Europese Economische Ruimte (E.E.R.) is het financieel niet haalbaar om een masteropleiding aan de Universiteit Utrecht te volgen. Zij kunnen geen lening aanvragen, mogen niet werken en betalen meer collegegeld. Een jaar studeren aan onze faculteit kost al snel zo'n 17.000 euro. En daar komen de kosten voor levensonderhoud nog bovenop. De Utrecht Excellence Scholarships zijn in het leven geroepen om ook hen in de gelegenheid te stellen om aan onze universiteit te studeren.
De komst van jonge talenten naar Utrecht is niet alleen van meerwaarde voor de beursstudenten zelf. Het is ook in alle opzichten een verrijking voor de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen en voor het internationale studieklimaat. Studenten hebben een internationale oriëntatie in hun opleiding nodig om een rol te kunnen vervullen op de complexe, globaliserende arbeidsmarkt.

Being able to become a student in the Gender Studies program allowed me to grow confident in, and even more passionate about the path I have drafted for myself. None of this would have been possible if I did not receive the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship and I will always be grateful for this opportunity. It pushed me to grow as a socially and politically aware and responsible person; it taught me so much about myself.”
Over het Fonds Vrienden van de Utrechtse Geesteswetenschappen
Ted Sanders, vice-decaan graduate onderwijs, zegt over de concrete aanleiding voor de instelling van het Fonds het volgende: “Het kwam regelmatig voor dat talentvolle buitenlandse studenten die aan de Universiteit Utrecht wilden komen studeren bij nader inzien toch afhaakten. Ze konden het simpelweg niet betalen om hier een MA-programma te volgen. De faculteit Geesteswetenschappen stimuleert met het Fonds graag de komst van uitstekende internationale studenten." Het streven is om het aantal te vergeven beurzen de komende jaren aan te vullen met steun van alumni, medewerkers, stichtingen, vermogensfondsen en het bedrijfsleven.

“During my bachelor’s in Fundamental and Computational Linguistics I developed a strong interest in psycholinguistics: the field that is concerned with psychological and neurobiological factors that enable humans to acquire, use, comprehend and produce language. Reading the key research papers written by Dutch linguists in this field, I dreamed about studying in the Netherlands myself. The Research Master's in Linguistics in Utrecht is an important step for my future academic career development and I am very grateful to UES for the opportunity to grow professionally in the field I wish to connect my life with. Without it, I would not have been able to pursue my dream.”
