Tomato is a wonderful model crop. Despite producing delicious fruits, the plant is not very eco-friendly. With a long vegetative stage and a preferred temperature of 25 degrees Celcius, indoor tomato cultivation has a massive ecological footprint. My research aims to abolish the vegetative growing time and have direct flowering. The uses for these plants include in-vitro fruit production. Here, the ultimate goal is to create fruits on a plate without the formation of any leaves that will ripen in a bioreactor. A truly futuristic idea.
