Martijn doet onderzoek op het raakvlak van economie en politiek, met een focus op de Europese Unie. Twee belangrijke thema's zijn Europees handelsbeleid en Europese streekproducten zoals Parmaham en Gouda Holland. Daarnaast bestudeert hij de besluitvorming van de EU (Artikel 50/Brexit, "Gele kaart" van nationale parlementen).
Martijn geeft regelmatig duiding over Europees handelsbeleid en politieke economie in Nederlandse media (NPO1 Bureau Buitenland, Een Vandaag, Feit of Fictie, NieuwsBV; NRC, nu.nl, Quest), maar ook bij buitenlandse media (bv. The Guardian, Politico.eu, De Standaard, De Tijd)
Hij bedenkt en geeft interdisciplinair onderwijs in de opleiding PPE (Politics-Philosophy-Economics).
