Glycobiology for Life

Understanding the normal variation within human milk and its impact on breastfed infants is important for global public health. The benefits of breastfeeding and the composition of human milk relies largely on glycobiology: studying the structure, function and biology of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. The insights gathered through glycobiology are not only relevant for health in early life, but also for the entire lifespan of an individual. Progress in this exciting area can only be achieved in strong public-private research networks.

Bernd Stahl is an Affiliated Associate Professor within the Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery Group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and the R&D Director of Human Milk Research & Analytical Science at Danone Nutricia Research, Utrecht. Furthermore, Bernd Stahl is currently a visiting researcher at the Department of Biochemistry, Center for Biomedical Mass Spectrometry at Boston 木瓜福利影视 School of Medicine, Boston, USA.

He received his PhD (Dr.rer.nat.; summa cum laude) in the area of analytical glycobiology at the 木瓜福利影视 of Muenster, Germany. Bernd Stahl is a recipient of the Mattauch-Herzog Award for Mass Spectrometry of the German Mass Spectrometry Society (DGMS). He has a strong background in biochemical research and has been making a significant contribution to human milk science for more than 30 years. Bernd Stahl is the author and co-author of more than 100 scientific publications, reviews and book chapters. His h-index is 47, excluding self-citations. Currently, his research focuses on understanding factors that influence and are influenced by breastfeeding and human milk, beyond nutrition. This will pave the way for the creation of innovative, specialized nutritionally or therapeutically relevant solutions.

Bernd Stahl is fascinated by the power of science and the opportunity to apply in-depth scientific insights to maintain or improve human health. This potential can only be realized when multidisciplinary expertise, including the growing knowledge of students in our education system, comes together.

Bernd Stahl is a member of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), American Chemical Society (ACS), Society for Glycobiology (SFG), German Biochemical Society (GBM), European Milk Bank Association (EMBA) and the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation (ISRHML).
