Seed fund projects
Creating globally aligned and locally-relevant pathways for energy transitions is complex and requires knowledge from different disciplines and societal stakeholders. Within this Community, the creation of such pathways is facilitated through transdisciplinary seed funding projects.

Acting on a just Energy Transition in the Netherlands
This project aims to develop hands-on perspectives for fostering Just Energy Transitions in the Netherlands. Together with policymakers in the Netherlands we investigate how the Dutch government can take an active role in aligning energy transitions and justice.

Enabling bottom-up initiatives in the energy transition
Bottom-up initiatives in the energy transition such as energy and heat cooperatives are important to accelerate the energy transition, foster societal acceptance and meet societal goals like energy justice and the limitation of energy poverty.

Sustainable energy access in refugee settlements and their host communities
This project aims to collect field data and design a model for estimating the latent demand for electricity in refugee camps in Africa - necessary elements to optimally size mini-grids and directly address the ‘lack of information’ challenge.

Transformative investments in green hydrogen development in the global South
This project aims to explore possibilities for transforming a structure of investment in projects that deepen decarbonization through green hydrogen projects. We pay particular attention to the historical context and possibilities to transform investment practices in the global South.

Machine-Learning Guided Discovery of Novel and Earth Abundant Electrolyser Materials
A promising technology for producing green hydrogen is the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser, but it relies on scarce platinum and iridium as electrocatalysts. Within this project, the research team developed a ML model that connects quantum-chemical properties and catalytic performance, considering not only the catalytic activity of the materials but also their price and abundance.
