- Department of Earth Sciences
We focus on understanding the evolution of the Earth and how it works as a system.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences - Economic Geography
This research programme aims to develop Evolutionary Economic Geography both theoretically and empirically.
/en/research/human-geography-and-planning/research/economic-geography - Experimental rock deformation/HPT-lab
We conduct research on the mechanical behaviour and transport properties of Earth materials at conditions pertaining to the Earth’s crust and upper mantle.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences/research/earth-planetary-processes/experimental-rock-deformation Geochemical research at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ emphasizes the study of processes taking place in environments near the Earth's surface, in particular, soils, sediments, aquifers, estuaries, and the ocean.
- Geolab
The GeoLab is the main laboratory facility of the Faculty of Geosciences. We have a wide range of lab facilities available for measuring bulk rock geochemistry, bulk rock stable isotopes (H, C, N, S), in situ stable and radiogenic isotopes (U,Pb-dating), in situ major and trace elements and crystallography.

Human Geography and Spatial Planning focusses on Sustainable Cities and Regions as an overarching theme.
/en/research/human-geography-and-planning - Hydrology, water resources and global change
At Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ we study hydrological processes from the scale of the smallest catchment, to continental and even global scale.

The International Development Studies (IDS) research programme provides an innovative contribution to our understanding of development within a context of globalization.
/en/research/human-geography-and-planning/research/international-development-studies - Mantle Dynamics
We study how geodynamic processes of the Earth’s mantle couple to tectonic evolution of the crust and to the deformation of the Earth’s surface.
/en/research/mantle-dynamics - Marine Palynology and Paleoceanography
We study climate and biota in past oceans to project the future.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences/marine-palynology-and-paleoceanography We investigate variatons of the geomagnetic field, neotectonic and geodynamical research, and rock magnetism & environmental magnetism
- Quaternary climate and landscape
Our research covers the last hundred thousands of years when rapid climate change and sea level rise took place under mostly natural conditions. By studying this particular time-period, we gain a better understanding of the relative contribution and functioning of natural processes on climate and landscape changes.
/en/research/department-of-physical-geography/research/quaternary-climate-and-landscape We extract information from earthquakes recorded at global and regional seismic networks to produce three-dimensional models of the Earth'sinterior, mostly using supercomputing.
- Spatial Planning
Our research program endeavours to further our understanding of how and why different – often co-existing – modes of governance either do or do not result in (environmentally) sustainable outcomes.
/en/research/human-geography-and-planning/research/spatial-planning - Stratigraphy and Paleontology
We carry out research in the field of (biological) validation of proxies and the development of time scales.
/en/node/609 - Structural Geology
We study structures and deformation processes in the Earth at all scales, from nanostructures to plate boundaries using tools ranging from electron microscopy to field geology.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences/structural-geology - Sustainability
This research theme aims to unravel system Earth for a sustainable future.
/en/research/sustainability - Tectonics
The Tectonics Group conducts innovative research to get a better understanding of the tectonic processes that control the mechanical deformation and thermal evolution of the Earth’s lithosphere and sedimentary basins.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences/tectonics - Tectonophysics
Tectonophysics (or lithospheric geodynamics) concentrates on trying to understand mantle and lithospheric processes that shape our planet.
/en/research/department-of-earth-sciences/tectonophysics - Urban Geography
Interactions between the behaviour of individuals and their households and the social and material-spatial structures at varying temporal and spatial scales
/en/research/human-geography-and-planning/research/urban-geography - Water Climate and Future Deltas
This research area focuses on dealing with problems related to subsidence and associated loss of ecosystem services.
