Causal link between cortical organization and conscious perception
Human cognitive abilities, including conscious perception, are accomplished by neurons located in the cerebral cortex of our brain. We will investigate causal relationships between neuronal organization and conscious perception in human subjects with clinically implanted electrodes. Prior to surgery, the detailed cortical organization is determined in individual subjects using fMRI, including 7T MRI. After surgery, conscious percepts elicited by electrical stimulation of the implanted electrodes are linked to the underlying cortical organization.
