Inside Investment Frontiers (InFront)

Globally concerted efforts for low carbon transitions are creating new value chains of minerals and fuels in peripheral regions of the Global South. These value chains provide these regions with much needed economic and infrastructure development. At the same time, they also open new frontiers of investments leading to spatial reorganisation. In this project, the team looks into the investment frontiers expanded from new extractive industries in Cabo Delgado Province of northern Mozambique. So far, the team has been following displacement and resettlement processes of over 100,000 people in the Province due to the natural gas production and graphite mine development. These processes are highly contested due to historical marginalisation of local people and livelihoods, exacerbated by the current development. We aim to show how transnational low carbon transitions can envision and manage such contestations.
