Four UU/UMCU ELSA Labs recognized by NLAIC
ELSA (Ethical Legal and Societal Aspetcs) Labs are an instrument of the of the NLAIC (Netherlands AI Coalition). The aim of the ELSA Labs is to ensure that companies, governmental authorities, centres of expertise, civil society organisations and the general public develop responsible applications of AI jointly. This involves solutions for both social and business problems, focusing on honesty, fairness, security and (above all) trustworthiness.
At UU and UMCU there are four ELSA Labs. All four have been recognized with the NL AIC Label. The ELSA Lab Value Alignment in Medical AI is most recently recognized, and is also supported by the .They meet the target objectives set for research and development of ELSA aspects of AI applications in an ELSA Lab.
The ELSA Lab Value Alignment in Medical AI (VAMAI) is a patient-driven ELSA lab, exploring how medical AI can be aligned with stakeholder values and needs to add real value to trusted AI solutions for health and healthcare. In doing so, the ELSA Lab focuses on AI applications within the medical domain, where patients and healthcare professionals are end users.
In the Netherlands, about 2.5 million have a low level of literacy, meaning that they have difficulty reading, writing and doing sums. Using computers and smartphones is also very awkward for them. Despite the broad range of assistance on offer, this issue has proved difficult to get a grip on. The ELSA Lab for an AI Approach to Low Literacy is therefore using AI technology to tackle the problems of low literacy and numeracy.
