How governments shape sustainability transitions in the Dutch agri-food system

Hens Runhaar, member of the Future Food Utrecht Management Team, co-authored a new study published in Environmental Science and Policy titled 鈥淲hat roles do governments play vis-脿-vis niche actors? A typology illustrated with transition dynamics in the Dutch agri-food system.鈥 The study examines how governments interact with niche actors and influence transitions in the Dutch agri-food system.
The authors propose a typology of six distinct government roles, ranging from actively facilitating regime change in favor of niche actors to defending incumbent systems. This is the first systematic attempt to capture the diversity of government roles in sustainability transitions and provides a practical tool for policymakers, politicians, and stakeholders.
The Stichting Transitiecoalitie Voedsel (TCV), a partner of Future Food Utrecht, contributed to this research.
