"Cooking is a lot like science"
I am Rashmi Sasidharan and I am professor of Plant Stress Resilience. Our goal is to understand and research how plants interact with their environment. Our research focuses on investigating how plants survive stresses such as drought, heat and flooding. Climate change has greatly exacerbated the frequency and severity of these weather events, with negative impacts on crop yields. This research area is of great importance, because we rely on plants for food, feed, fiber, and fuel.
The best science happens when you have a safe environment
What makes our research unique is the combination of biochemical, molecular, genetics and systems biology approaches that combines knowledge from model, wild and cultivated plant species.
I came to Utrecht in 2009 to start my job as a postdoctoral researcher. The atmosphere in the UU Plants groups is highly collegial and stimulating. I really like the lack of hierarchy. No one pulls rank and everyone is very approachable. And that makes working across layers relatively easy.
My goal is to contribute towards the generation of climate resilient crops and increasing the awareness of the importance of plant science research.
