"Music and math are both like languages"

"Music and math are both like languages to me. They both require a structured way of thinking... My name is Gijs Heuts and I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics. The projects that I work on are all around the theme of understanding how different shapes of high dimension can be deformed into one another. To do this, we develop the mathematical language and the mathematical tools to study those shapes."

We all get the personal freedom to pursue the ideas that we find interesting

"What I value about working at the Faculty of Science is that we all get the personal freedom we have to pursue the ideas that we find interesting. We get to do that in a very lively and vibrant setting with great colleagues. Talking together about mathematics, bouncing ideas back and forth 鈥 it鈥檚 a constant source of inspiration and a great way to develop new ideas.

Much of my work involves the theory of (generalised) Lie algebras and its applications to chromatic homotopy theory. Currently my work is funded by the ERC Starting Grant "Chromatic homotopy theory of spaces" and the NWO Vidi grant "Hopf algebras and periodic homotopy theory鈥.

Requesting research funding is quiet an essential part of working in academica in the Netherlands. At the Faculty of Science, we support one another in optimizing our research proposals. This approach contributes to the faculty鈥檚 success in obtaining funding for new research."
