Solar energy
Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 (UU) aims to be CO2 neutral by 2030. To achieve this, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is investing heavily in saving energy by making its buildings more sustainable and (preferably) generating its own sustainable energy.
The university is therefore committed to as many solar panels as possible on roofs, solar fields and solar carports. In total, there are some 7,500 solar panels on UU buildings. This will generate 1,700,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the electricity consumption of almost 700 Dutch households. To make great progress, in 2023 UU signed an agreement for the rights to build 50% of a large solar field in Bunnik and operate it for 30 years. This will take its own share of solar energy from 3% to 20% in one step. The entire solar farm will generate over 16 GWh of renewable energy. That is equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 6,000 households.
Solar Farm Bunnik
Most buildings are equipped with solar panels. To make great strides, other applications are also needed including larger field arrangements of solar panels, which do not physically fit in the in the Utrecht Science Park (USP). Therefore, UU is building a solar park in Bunnik and will operate it for the next 30 years. The solar park, together with the existing solar panels on university buildings, will cover about 30% of UU's total electricity needs.
