Episode: Biodiversity at Utrecht Science Park
Unfortunately, this episode is only available in Dutch on Spotify.
In this episode of Een Academisch Kwartiertje met…, we speak with Marie-Jeanne Schiffelers and farmer Jorn Vernooij about biodiversity on campus. They share projects that strengthen nature, such as wildlife-friendly ditch banks and organic farming at De Tolakker. We also learn about special species like the lapwing and the grass snake, whose presence reflects the health of local ecosystems. Thanks to herb-rich verges, ecological corridors and newly created habitats, the campus is becoming greener every day.
At De Tolakker farm, ten hectares of grassland are being transformed into ecological buffer zones. This has been made possible by reducing the number of cows — and therefore the need for animal feed. Farmer Jorn sows herb-rich grass mixes in select fields, ploughs less deeply, and even uses a drone to detect lapwing nests before mowing. Meanwhile, biologists and environmental scientists study the impact of these measures on local biodiversity.
