Long Stay > 90 days

Depending on your nationality, you may be required to apply for a Residence Permit (Verklaring Voorlopig Verblijf, VVR) which will allow you to legally stay in the Netherlands. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, you will have to submit an application to the within 3 working days after arrival. Your Faculty contact person can help you with your application.

City registration

Anyone staying in the Netherlands for more than 4 months (also EU/EEA nationalities), must register with the Municipal Personal Records Database (Gemeentelijke Basis Administratie, GBA) This city registration is required. If your place of residence is the municipality of Utrecht, you must go to Civil Registry Office (Burgerzaken) at the  after applying your Residence Permit (VVR).

What documents must you provide?

  • a valid proof of identity
  • a rental contract or permission from your landlord that you can register formally at the address where you are going to live.. You will need to submit a copy of the landlord's proof of identity. If you own a house in the Netherlands, you must provide a deed of purchase
  • if married: a marriage certificate (if possible)
  • in some cases: a legal birth certificate.

Citizen Service Number

A Citizen Service Number (BurgerServiceNumber, BSN) is a unique registration number. A BSN is used in contact with any government service. You may also need it in order to open a bank account or for other official types of registration. If you intend to stay in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you receive a BSN automatically when you register with the Municipality. Read more about BSN at the  and .
