Mothering Across Borders
Immigrant mothers need to navigate their parenting experience in a foreign country with potentially less social support and guidance and find the balance between the norms and expectations of their origin culture and that of the culture they live in. Despite this double challenge, there is little support to enhance their well-being and experiences. Mothering Across Borders - Dialogue Series aim to support immigrant women in the process of adjusting to their new role as a mother in a rather unfamiliar cultural context. We do this in 3 steps. Firstly, through the act of sharing and reflecting in a group, we listen to their experiences and challenges as new mothers. Secondly, we inform them based on academic evidence about the ways in which they can cope with some of the challenges they may face. Thirdly, we, the researchers, get inspired and develop a research line on immigrant parents’ well-being by virtue of our two-way interaction.
Collaboration
The dialogue series is a collaboration with the Utrecht based social initiative Parenting Across Borders and will be co-facilitated by its founders Najuan Daadleh and Mieka Vroom.
