The Thrift Shack
The Thrift Shack Project Group is a sustainability initiative of students and staff. It provides students and staff the opportunity to give and take free second-hand items. To this end, it manages a permanent giveaway space in Restaurant Educatorium: Thrift Shack Educatorium. It also manages an Instagram account for promotion: thriftshackutrecht.
This project group organizes various sustainability events such as collection events, giveaway events, item swaps, and clothing swaps. In many of these events, it cooperates with other sustainability initiatives such as Groentetas and Green Office HU. During the half-yearly collection events, this project group collects old kitchen and household items from outgoing students. These are given away later at incoming students and thrift stores.
The main long-term goal of the Thrift Shack is to obtain a more sizeable and accessible space on campus to collect and give away second-hand items. To this end, it is in dialogue with various like-minded stakeholders and staff members. When there is an opportunity and sufficient support, this goal may become a reality in the near future.
