Living Landscapes: a peek into the local biodiversity of Utrecht

Our new exhibition "Living Landscapes: a peek into the local biodiversity of Utrecht" showcases a selection of the diverse and vibrant life that surrounds us, even in the city. Explore the wonders of Utrecht鈥檚 biodiversity and gain a deeper understanding of the life that surrounds us every day.

Are you aware of the species still living amidst our urban spaces?

Biodiversity in the Netherlands has faced significant challenges over recent decades. Shifts in land use, urban expansion, and climate change have all contributed to a general decline in native species across the country. However, amid these challenges, efforts to conserve and restore biodiversity have intensified, reflecting a growing commitment to safeguarding the unique ecosystems that make up the Dutch landscape.

A look at the biodiversity in Utrecht offers a fascinating microcosm of these broader biodiversity trends. Urban development often places pressure on local wildlife, yet these areas are also home to resilient species that have adapted to co-exist with human activities. Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 has identified 20 icon species for the USP that indicate a vital and healthy local ecosystem. This exhibition highlights four of these: Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), ragged-robin (Silene flos-cuculi), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and scarce chaser (Libellula fulva). We also look at some key species that can live in urbanized areas under specific circumstances. Such as the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae), house sparrow (Passer domesticus). These organisms not only capture the imagination with their unique traits but also provide crucial ecological services, playing an integral part in the web of life in Utrecht.

Yet, their future is uncertain. Recent trends show fluctuations in populations, some declining due to habitat loss, pollution, and other pressures, while others, thanks to conservation efforts, have seen signs of recovery. For instance, the house sparrow and hedgehog have faced alarming declines, while the scarce chaser, a rare dragonfly, has become a symbol of wetland preservation efforts.

How well is our biodiversity doing?

Looking ahead, we envision a future where these icon species not only survive but thrive. By fostering biodiversity-friendly urban planning and expanding green spaces, Utrecht can serve as a model for other cities striving to balance urbanization with ecological preservation. This exhibition invites you to explore these species, learn about their current status, and join the conversation on shaping a future where both humans and wildlife can flourish together.
