Correction methods
Parents use over 50 methods to correct their children’s unacceptable behaviour. Is yelling an advisable correction method?
Their children’s unacceptable behaviour may exasperate the parents. It is not unthinkable that they lose patience and start yelling at their child. While this may be an understandable reaction, it is not an advisable method to correct your children. Children who are told off in this way have a higher risk of demonstrating problem behaviour, such as aggression. The effects of yelling at children to make them understand depend, however, partly on the personality of the child involved. Very friendly or conscientious children may be less ‘bothered’ by this method than children who score lower on these personality traits. Nevertheless, all children will benefit more from other corrective methods, for instance by explaining to them why their behaviour is unacceptable.
