The role of parental self-regulation in parenting

Kind in rommelige kamer

By zooming in on interactions between parents and children, we want to get a better picture of the way in which parental self-regulation plays a role in parenting. Various studies show that negative parenting practices, such as harsh and inconsistent parenting, are associated with poor child self-regulation, and that especially parents with poor self-regulation themselves demonstrate such parenting practices. For this project, we filmed parents and  their children, and coded their behaviors from second to second. Parents also performed a number of tasks related to self-regulation. In this way we can examine in detail whether the way parents deal with their children differs depending on their self-regulation skills.
