Peer report extension for Qualtrics

Many UU researchers use the powerful Qualtrics tool to create complex surveys. Thanks to a UU subsidy, an extension of the standard Qualtrics package has been developed. This makes it possible to use peer assessment techniques.

Researchers who study social groups often apply peer reports. Peer reports use members of a group as a source of information to measure social behavior of individual members (e.g., 'Who helps others?'; 'Who bullies others?') or the relations between them (e.g., 'Who do you like the most?'). Examples of groups include the workplace, old people's homes, prisons, sports teams, and school classes. Compared with questionnaires that rely on other sources of information (e.g., boss, team leader, teacher, parent, self) peer reports have several advantages. An important advantage is that peers are well-informed and provide direct insider information of group behavior and relations.

Extension

Until now, the ability to create peer report surveys in Qualtrics was lacking. A grant from Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ’s IT Innovation Fund to Marjolijn Vermande (Department of Clinical Child and Family Studies) and Jim Maarseveen (HTS ICT, FSW) made it possible to have an extension to the standard Qualtrics package developed.

Features of this peer report package

  • Possibility to use peer nominations (e.g., 'Which children in your class help others?') and peer ratings (e.g., 'How much do you like … [group member]').
  • Data can be exported in several formats, both for standard statistical analysis (for packages such as SPSS) and for social network analysis.
  • A template to easily create your own peer reports survey.
  • Excel files for importing group members and exporting data.
  • Functional specifications with a brief introduction to peer reports.
  • Manual.

For researchers and students

Last September, researchers in Educational Sciences were the first to use this peer report extension (80 school classes and 3 data collection rounds/waves). Other researchers and students can now use this extension as well.
