Wrap your gifts sustainably: 5 days until the holidays

Following our previous calendar entry containing great non-material gift suggestions, here's one for those of you that do plan on giving something material to your loved one for the holidays, but with an added touch.

While it is true that good things can come in small packages, what is most important is the way in which that package was wrapped. Once you read through the alternatives that are out there, which are more sustainable and creative, you may just say goodbye to conventional gift wrap for good.

This is a list compiled by Natalie of the Green Office circularity committee, as part of our wider countdown to the holiday period.

Idea 1

Instead of using conventional gift wrap, you can reuse wrapping paper from previous years and/or use newspaper that may be already lying around your home. You can paint it, draw on it, or leave it as it is. Up to you!

Idea 2

Use furoshiki, a type of traditional Japanese wrappnig cloth. This is a great way to completely avoid single-use paper and tape. The designs look impressive but are actually very simple to do, and you can find many blog posts and Youtube tutorials out there with step-by-step instructions. This idea also means that the nice furoshiki fabric (often available at vintage shops and some kringloopwinkels) can become an additional gift for the person receiving the present, as it can serve as a scarf.

Idea 3

Use reusable fabric gift bags. If you enjoy sewing, consider the idea of creating these simple bags which are just as colourful as festive paper would be, but much more sustainable! Creating a variety of sizes and themes means that they could be reused for years and for other events such as birthdays.

Idea 4

Avoid using plastic tape. Paper tape is a great alternative to plastic tape, but if you cannot access somewhere that sells it, then simply (re)using ribbons or twine to tie the paper around the object is a quick and affordable way to secure the wrapping.
