On 17 March 2022, Alex Oude Elferink gave a presentation to the Working Party on Maritime Issues - EU Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS). The subject of his presentation was the contribution of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to maritime safety and security. The EUMSS, which was adopted in 2014, is currently being reviewed.

In his presentation, he addressed, among other things, the continued significance of the Convention for a rule-based international order for the ocean, threats to the stability of the Convention, specific global and regional issues, including the intergovernmental conference convened by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to negotiate the agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction and capacity building.
