Waste separation in the city centre

Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 aims to achieve Zero Waste business operations. Reducing residual waste by better separation is an important part of this. Waste is collected separately in all buildings in the Utrecht Science Park and at the International Campus Utrecht. In the corridors are coloured bins for the various types of waste: residual waste, paper, GFE and PD. In the city centre, things work slightly differently. Due to logistical challenges in narrow streets and limited space, there are two bins in the city centre: for paper and a bin for mixed waste.

The best possible solution for the city centre

In the UU buildings within the Singel, paper and mixed waste (that is residual waste including plastic and drinking cartons, and GFE) are collected separately. At a post-separation station operated by the municipality of Utrecht, the plastic and drinking cartons are removed from the residual waste and recycled. The university opts for post-separation as the city centre's most feasible and cost-efficient solution.

Waste separation in the city centre

In the city centre, we face many practical challenges in processing waste. It is mainly due to the logistical constraints in the city centre (narrow streets through which large and heavy trucks cannot and are not allowed by the municipality). Furthermore, there is little space around the buildings to collect waste separately in containers (one large compactor takes up less space than 86 different small containers). Campus & Facilities continues to monitor market developments, but for now opts for the post-separation of waste.

Together towards a Zero Waste UU

UU is working towards a Zero Waste operation. In order to achieve this, we want to increase our understanding of our waste and waste streams, buy circularly, separate all our waste and thus work towards an operational management in which we no longer speak of waste, but of raw materials for high-quality reuse.
