The Earth Sciences and Physical Geography departments within the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� have both been assessed as world class by the research review committee of the Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities (QANU) for the years 2008-2013. Both institutes have a reputation for excellence for their PhD programs, social and scientific relevance and outreach.

A coherent and healthy unit

The research review group QANU commended the Department of Earth Sciences as “a coherent and healthy unit with a bright future, a gem in the scientific world of the Netherlands". The report mentions: “The institute has an excellent international reputation that is supported by strong publications, strategic relationships with national and international partners, attracts a high degree of external funding and has an excellent PhD program.”

Highly relevant research agenda

The Physical Geography Research Institute (PGRI) also has an outstanding international reputation. The Committee emphasises the highly relevant research agenda in relation to society and science and praises the size and diversity of their research undertakings. PGRI’s developed research strategies are, according to the committee, among the most innovative in the field. The commission speaks very highly of the development and growth of the institution and foresees further enhancement of their international visibility and impact.

Mutual trust and commitment

The committee noted and admired the mutual trust and commitment that exists within Earth Sciences between the scientists and the different tiers of government in the faculty and university, a trait that is rarely seen as strong, according to the commission. It is the opinion of the committee that “This is a wonderful spirit worth holding on to.”
