Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 raises rainbow flag to mark 20 years of marriage equality
On Thursday 1 April the rainbow flag waves at the Administration Building to celebrate the 20th anniversary of marriage equality in the Netherlands. With the raising of the flag, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 celebrates the acceptance, equality and safety of all people from the LGBT+ community. The flag was raised by Fleur Koolstra and Roel Zeegers, Praeses and Vice-Praeses of
Huge impact on LHBT+-community
Fleur and Roel share why celebrating this milestone is important, also for the current generation of students: "For 20 years we've been living in a country where men can marry men and women can marry women. It has become so normal in the Netherlands that we don't often think about the fact that this was not possible before. In many countries this is not the case and in some countries having a relationship with someone of the same sex is even illegal.
The legality of marriage for people of the same sex has had a huge impact on the LGBT+ community and we can be proud of the milestone that has been reached. Besides the acceptance that this law shows, there are of course many other advantages of marriage equality. An example is the sharing of parental authority when adopting a child."
No worries about getting married
"Young people cannot remember a time when marriage for people of the same sex was not legal in the Netherlands and this normalisation contributes to the acceptance we seek. This ensures that today's students do not have to worry about getting married in the future, whether they are straight or part of the LGBT+ community. There is no longer any need to discuss the legality of marriage for people of the same sex, this is a fact in the Netherlands. We are enormously happy and proud of that."
