Unified Diversity
Science is too complex to solve problems in small settings. Now is the time to capitalize on our strengths to address the scientific and societal problems of today and in our future. In Utrecht, we have excellent qualities and fantastic expertise, and sprinkled throughout campus are mini-ecosystems and networks. Interestingly, there is quite some overlap between seemingly disparate groups, revealing the enormous potential we have right in our own backyard.
Our greatest strength is our diversity. Diversity in people, scientific approach, technologies, perspectives, thought processes. But our greatest strength could also be our downfall: how do we find each other and how can we benefit from our diversity? This challenge was presented to us, when we were asked to co-direct a new initiative for Utrecht Life Sciences. We serve as catalysts and facilitators, with the goal of energizing the community to become proactive and to enjoy learning from each other. From this, we鈥檙e confident great science will bubble to the surface even faster.
Fresh ideas, sharing and making a difference best describe the environment we鈥檙e hoping to cultivate, and we鈥檙e taking the advice of former ULS Director Jos van Putten, to heart:
The 12 commandments from the former director, Jos van Putten
- Live with the diversity among ULS partners.
- Focus on innovation, not renovation.
- Don鈥檛 go for an island with the usual suspects.
- Sustainable health come from committed scientists, not disguised opportunities.
- Invest in fresh, new ideas.
- Balance the input and expected output.
- Ensure that technology and expertise are accessible to the entire ULS community.
- Develop your own communication team and strategy.
- Cherish and facilitate grassroots initiatives.
- Resist the paperwork epidemic and focus on scientific content.
- Are we truly making a difference?
- Enjoy your moments.
High-risk ideas, out-of-the-box thinking and chance must be balanced by a long-term perspective, open access and continued momentum. The call for interdisciplinary hubs is a first step in this journey, and we hope to translate our thoughts and yours, into actionable programs and processes that will allow our community to flourish.
So, join us, engage with us. Help us sail towards a unified diverse ecosystem. And simply enjoy the adventure.
