Three new Senior Fellows, Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning appointed
As of 1 September 2022, three new Senior Fellows will be appointed by the Executive Board: Dr. Matthieu Brinkhuis (faculty of Science), Dr. Brianne Mc Gonigle Leyh (faculty of Law, Economics and Governance) and Dr. Frank van Rijnsoever (faculty of Geosciences).
During their Senior Fellowship, they work on a faculty and/or university-wide project to further improve education, dedicate themselves to teacher development and deepen their knowledge in the field of educational science. In doing so, they contribute to contextual knowledge of higher education. Successful completion of the programme will culminate in a nomination for a position as full professor with a special emphasis on education. A further introduction of our new Senior Fellows follows below.
Dr. Matthieu Brinkhuis, faculty of Science
Matthieu is well recognized as an expert in learning analytics and evaluation and has a proven track record in key positions in education at his faculty, such as degree director of the Applied Data Science Master Programme and director of education for Continuing Education within the Graduate School of Natural Science. He is very successful in connecting to external parties and has organized well regarded programmes for professionals in the areas of data science and artificial intelligence, in particular for civil servants at the ministry of internal affairs. He brings a lot of expertise in data science and learning analytics and, as part of his career is outside the UU, has external visibility and collaborations.
With his project on Continuing Education (CE) he wants to explore how to create joint programmes with societal partners, moving from CE for professionals, to CE with professionals. His project includes a case study on a new joint data science programme, exploring assessment procedures and designing quality control for such joint CE programmes.
As a university, together with our societal partners, our challenge is to combine our expertise into a high-quality range of joint programmes for professionals that benefit society.
Dr. Brianne Mc Gonigle Leyh, faculty of Law, Economics and Governance
Brianne is a highly motivated and passionate academic who is continuously looking for ways to bring research, education and practice into constructive interaction. She has demonstrated leadership and innovation in both education and research that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Within her faculty she is recognized as an important strategic player in the area of (international) community engaged learning (CEL) and makes valuable contributions to educational policy through her work within the School of Law and across university groups such as the Centre for Global Challenges (UGlobe).
With her project, she aims to establish an Open Source Investigations Lab that will bring students, teachers, and societal partners together to work towards addressing key global challenges. The project will equip students with the interdisciplinary skills and ethical considerations required to learn how to conduct and evaluate open source investigations. An important aspect of the project will be promoting knowledge exchanges within and beyond the university.
My goal is to enhance international and interdisciplinary education that connects with research and practice in order to encourage students to become critical global citizens.
Dr. Frank van Rijnsoever, faculty of Geosciences
Frank is an excellent and passionate teacher with ample experience in leading educational innovation processes. He has a strong ambition to educate leaders of change (LOC) who are very much needed to help solving the big societal challenges. He has significant experience with leadership responsibilities in a variety of positions and is a prime example of how high quality research, teaching and impact can be combined in one person. Frank wants to solve problems and he has a lot of creative ideas, experience and expertise to enable him to do so.
The Senior Fellow programme will give him lots of opportunities to further develop his educational scholarship and become a recognized expert in the field of educational development. Frank鈥檚 project is about 鈥淎dmission and assessment in leaders of social change education鈥. He aims to develop evidence-based criteria on which to match students with fitting LOC programs and learning activities, and to assess their progress.
It is my goal to transform our university into an 鈥渆cosystem鈥 where student initiatives can emerge and thrive.
