The X factor: Questioning the legitimacy of gender registration
Christine Quinan and Marjolein van den Brink (both Utrecht 木瓜福利影视) presented a paper at a conference of the Social Legal Studies Association (SLSA).
鈥淓ven those countries that do accept X markers, I suspect simply having the marker may open me up to more scrutiny and potential for harassment, whether I pass or not.鈥 This was said by one of the transgender interviewees of Christine Quinan (Gender Studies, UU).
The interview is part of her research into 鈥榯ravelling with an X鈥. Is a passport with an X helpful or not for people who do not fit well into one of the traditional gender boxes (male / female)? On the results of this (ongoing) research Quinan presented a paper together with UCERF researcher Marjolein van den Brink, at a conference of the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA). Van den Brink discussed the legal and human rights background of the worldwide discussions on a 鈥榯hird box鈥, in light of the experiences of stakeholders, as recorded by Quinan.
The SLSA conference is held annually. This year, it was organised from 30 march 鈥 1 April (online), by the 木瓜福利影视 of Cardiff (UK).
