How do the Equal Earth projection and the Mercator projection affect our perception?

The world map has been in a lot in recent days. The 55 countries of the African Union are committed to the global use of the Equal Earth projection.

This is a projection for a world map that shows the relative sizes of countries better than the old, but still widely used, Mercator projection. Marco van Egmond, curator of maps and atlases at the university library, has spoken to various media outlets (in Dutch) to explain the Mercator projection and how it affects our perception of reality:
