Today, on International Women鈥檚 day, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence. Researchers from Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, specifically from the European Equality Law Network, were involved, providing the necessary and important input for the Commission.

The objective of the proposal is to ensure that all EU Member States have the necessary minimum rules in place to effectively combat violence against women and domestic violence. includes EU-wide criminalisations of certain forms of violence against women and contains targeted measures to ensure victims of such violence are granted access to justice, adequate protection and support, and that measures are taken to prevent violence against women and domestic violence from happening in the first place. The proposal will also include rules on coordination and cooperation, as well as enable EU-level monitoring and enforcement.

Much needed tool for the safety of women

As part of the preparatory works for this Directive, the European Commission asked the gender equality stream of the European Equality Law Network \to perform on gender-based violence against women (GBVAW) including ICT-facilitated violence. The results of this study were used to feed into the legislative proposal. The study found that the level of protection offered to women by the national regulations varies widely, making the proposed Directive a much needed tool in order to secure the safety of women and enable equal participation in all aspects of society across the EU.
