Sort through text data at lightning speed with ASReview

Version 1.0 of the ASReview was launched on 9 June 2022. As one of the largest open-source software projects at the university, ASReview allows users to save valuable time sorting through enormous amounts of text data. Rens van de Schoot, Professor of Statistics for Small Data Sets at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and driving force behind the software project: 鈥淲ith ASReview, the time saved on tasks like screening systematic reviews, meta-analysis or developing a medical guideline can run up to 95%.鈥 ASReview has since grown into a global community of researchers, users and developers.

Scientific articles are accumulating at a breakneck pace; at the current rate, academic output is doubling every nine years. Van de Schoot: 鈥淪ay you鈥檙e updating a medical guideline amid that exponentially growing pile of new knowledge. Or need to draw up an evidence-based policy. Or are looking for new technologies. You simply don鈥檛 have the time to read all of the relevant scientific literature.鈥

Team accomplishment

Over the past few years, a multi-disciplinary team from Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 has developed an open-source tool to support people in conducting literature research and find relevant articles quickly: . The team included scientists from a variety of disciplines, including statistics, data science and medicine, as well as IT engineers and specialists from the 木瓜福利影视 Library. Van de Schoot is pleased at the result they鈥檝e achieved together: "It鈥檚 really a team accomplishment.鈥

That makes the ASReview project a prime example of how Open Science research can aid you in your work.

Open Science

In addition to maintaining and updating the beta version, the team spent more than two years working on version 1.0. Jonathan de Bruin, Research Software Specialist at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视: 鈥淥ur team of 18 staff members wrote more than 70,000 lines of code, edited more than 500 files, and wrote hundreds of pages of documentation.鈥 The new version 1.0 of the software was designed entirely according to the latest guidelines by Big Tech companies. 鈥淚t features a simulation mode, so everyone can test the performance of different machine learning models. Users can even add their own models to see if they perform better than the ones currently available.鈥 That makes the ASReview project a prime example of how Open Science research (and the development of software projects) can aid you in your work. Van de Schoot invites everyone to participate. 鈥淲e鈥檒l be having an on 1 July. And explains how you can contribute to the project.鈥
