Sharing Days: Stories of Refugees
Former Incluusion students and trainees gave a special glimpse into their lives as refugees during Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund's Sharing Days event. At the Academy Building, the audience was taken into the world of Incluusion. The personal stories created engagement, awareness and admiration among the audience.
I don't like it when people feel sorry for me when they know that I'm a refugee
Ragna Senf (Incluusion project manager) talked about Incluusion and the different projects that have been developed within the program in recent years. Asylum seekers and status holders can participate in bachelor courses at UU through Incluusion, and nowadays they are also being prepared for studying at UU through Restart (Refugees Studying - Academic Return Track). In addition, status holders can obtain work experience at the UU through the Incluusion Traineeship program.
The speakers at the event were mainly former Incluusion students and trainees. They spoke about their integration process, their challenges and opportunities in the Netherlands, and what Incluusion means to them. They also answered 'cheeky questions' that participants could ask beforehand via the registration form. Cheeky questions such as "Do you feel welcome in the Netherlands?" and "Do you think the UU is accessible to refugees?" provided interesting examples of cultural differences.
When we arrived in the Netherlands, we were afraid that the police would send us back. So I started to explain immediately why we wanted to apply for asylum. The police interrupted me and asked: What do your children want to drink?
Incluusion looks back on a successful event, with many thanks to the Faculty Club for their hospitality.
