Sextus Empiricus and Ancient Physics
Sextus Empiricus and Ancient Physics, edited by Prof. Dr (Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, History of Philosophy) and Prof. Dr Katerina Ierodiakonou (木瓜福利影视 of Athens), offers a series of in-depth studies on Sextus Empiricus' Against the Physicists.
Redressing the balance
The two books of Sextus Empiricus' Against the Physicists have not received much attention in their own right, as sustained and methodical specimens of sceptical philosophy. Algra and Ierodiakonou redress the balance by offering a series of in-depth studies on these texts. Their book focuses in particular on the overall argumentative structure of Against the Phisicists, and on the various ways in which the formal features of Sextus' texts relate to their contents. They show how Sextus' procedures vary from one section to the other, and shed new light on the way he was using his sources.
Nine topics
Algra and Ierodiakonou follow Sextus' own division of his two books into nine successive topics: god, cause, wholes and parts, body, place, motion, time, number, coming-to-be and passing-away. In Sextus Empiricus and Ancient Physics these nine chapters are preceded by an introduction which discusses a number of general features of Sextus' scepticism and links the conclusions of this volume to some recent discussions on the scope of ancient scepticism.
Keimpe Algra is Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy. He has published widely on ancient philosophy, in particular on Hellenistic philosophy and ancient science. His current research focusses on the relation between physics and mathematics in ancient thought, and on Stoic theology.
Katerina Ierodiakonou is Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the 木瓜福利影视 of Athens and Assistant Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the 木瓜福利影视 of Geneva. She has published extensively on ancient and Byzantine philosophy, especially in the areas of epistemology and logic.
