Are you talking about "farmers" in your work? Or "smallholders" in African agriculture and food systems? And do you collect gender-disaggregated data with a view to do justice to inequities? If so, consider the following paper, and learn how research on "farmers" and "irrigators" in Africa, in spite of good intentions and awareness among researchers, can still (re)produce gender-blindness. With a view to contribute to more accurate and inclusive representations of smallholder farming in Africa, and help rethink the design of methods and the collection of alternative types of gender-disaggregated data in food and agricultural surveys, we end the paper with some concrete suggestions for future research.
