Professor John Vervaele on audience with the Pope during international criminal justice congress

John Vervaele, professor of economic and European criminal law at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, has been re-appointed as chairman of the world organisation for criminal law AIDP. The twentieth congress of the AIDP took place in Rome and the participants, including Professor Vervaele, were invited for an audience with Pope Francis. 

This years congress, organized by the Luiss Guido Carli 木瓜福利影视, was "". Due to the growing role of corporations in society, they have become central actors in domestic and international regulation, ranging from issues of corporate social responsibility to criminal liability for corruption and serious human rights violations.  During the AIDP (International De Droit P茅nal) congress in Rome from 13 to 16 November, participants discussed matters such as criminal protection of the environment, the fight against corruption and the regulation of the market. Professor John Vervaele delivered one of the keynote speeches as chairman of the AIDP. Three other Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 scientists were also speakers at the conference: Michel Luchtman, Stanislaw Tosza and Cedric Ryngaert..

Penal law to protect people and the earth

During the audience with the Pope, the church leader insisted on strengthening of penal law against "idolatry of the market". People are often vulnerable and defenseless towards the power and interests of companies, according to the Pope. According to him, global financial capital is the cause of serious crimes, not only against property, but also against people and the environment. He spoke of "organised crime" that in some cases is responsible for the debt of states and the plundering of our planets natural resources.

During the audience, Professor Vervaele gave Pope Francis an issue of the AIDP journal, focussing on protection of the environment through criminal law, a favourite theme of the pope.
Vervaele has been chairman of the AIDP since 2014 and has now been reappointed.
