Prof. Sierd Cloetingh appointed Vice President of European Research Council
On 17 February the European Research Council announced the appointment of of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 as its vice president. Cloetingh has been an ERC council member since 2009.
As Vice President of the European Research Council (ERC), Sierd Cloetingh will be in charge of the Physical Science and Engineering domain. One of his key tasks will be to supervise the selection of the peer review panels that form the core of the ERC鈥檚 activities. Cloetingh was appointed at the same time as Professor Mart Saarma of the 木瓜福利影视 of Helsinki, who will be in charge of the Life Sciences domain.
Cloetingh is Professor of Earth Sciences and Tectonics at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视鈥檚 Faculty of Geosciences. He was awarded a university professorship in 2014 and plays a key role in Utrecht 木瓜福利影视鈥檚 strategic theme of Sustainability. As programme director he is responsible for monitoring and developing coherence in this theme鈥檚 research.
About Sierd Cloetingh
With over 300 scientific publications, Professor Sierd Cloetingh (1950) is among the top tectonics scientists in the world and, as a professor, has supervised more than 70 PhDs. He is an Academy professor and a member of Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). As vice president of the ERC and president of the Academia Europaea (the European equivalent of the KNAW) Cloetingh is a key figure in the international earth science world.
Cloetingh is also editor-in-chief of the international journal Global and Planetary Change and was a founder of the European Large Scale Collaborative Research Programme (EUROCORES) TOPO-EUROPE, in which 23 countries and 60 young researchers, PhDs and postdocs participate.
Cloetingh has received five international honorary doctorates and numerous honours and awards for his contributions to science, including the French Chevalier dans l鈥橭rdre national de la L茅gion d鈥橦onneur in 2005 and the Dutch Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2014.
